Talking Stone: Rock Art of the Cosos is a motion picture portrait of rock art in the California desert. It is produced by Paul Goldsmith, ASC cinematographer. Goldsmith is an Emmy and Oscar award winning film producer who is known for his keen eye and uncanny talent for weaving a captivating story line through words and pictures. CRAF is handling the California distribution of this exciting film.

What is Talking Stone?

Hidden away in the canyons of a top-secret military base on the edge of the Mojave Desert is the largest concentration of rock art in North America. Created over thousands of years by a now vanished culture, it represents the oldest art in California. TALKING STONE, the film, explores the remote canyons and the mysteries surrounding these amazing images.

I am astounded that the Matarango Museum doesn't have a highly visible reference to the California Rock Art Foundation for more (better) information & (hopefully) photos of Coso Range petroglyphs. My business associate's photographs of petroglyphs from Lagomarsino Canyon are so good they have been added to the Nevada Rock Art foundation's website. The rock art photos in books ans scientific papers offered by Matarango Museum ar just plain poor and unprofessional!

You are correct but there is a new book out now by our colleague and board member that has some beautiful images of the Cosos. Hope you like it. It is the companion volume to the film Talking Stone: Rock Art of the Cosos. It is put out by the University of Utah Press. Hope you like this...

I believe what the foundation is doing is important and noble to conserving the heritage of the Native California people. Whoever, the website of the foundation lacks vital information that would be useful in research and understanding the doings in discovering and recording findings concerning rock art in California.

Hello Leon,

I somehow missed your message until now. Thank you for the compliment, and for your feedback.

CRAF is a growing, volunteer-run, non-profit 501c3. As such, we are proud of how much we have accomplished in a relatively short amount of time. We could not have come this far without the support of people such as yourself; thank you!
That being said, we recognize that we still have some work to do.

We have goals in-line with your suggestions. For example, we are currently working on creating a rock art research archive/center, but it will be likely be a few years more before we will be ready to open it. We also plan to create a "CRAF Members Only" web page providing access to research materials.
